A Nigerian soldier under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) has died ostensibly of natural causes, the peacekeeping mission said on Thursday.A statement released by the Senegalese head of the ECOMIG mission, Fulgence Ndure, said Staff Sergeant Abubakar Abdullahi of the Nigerian contingent died after suffering breathing problems.
ECOMIG said 46-year-old S/Sgt Abdullahi experienced “irregular breathing while in his sleep and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention”.
The Nigerian peacekeeper had died shortly afterwards and his remains are yet to be released by the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital Morgue in Banjul.
Abdullahi’s body will eventually be flown to his native Nigeria where he will be given the required funeral rites before his burial in accordance with national, traditional and military traditions.
