Recently appointed Vice President Ousainou Darboe has assured Americans that The Gambia truly values their friendship and is appreciative of the leadership role America plays in the world.
He made these remarks on Tuesday at U.S. Embassy’s Independence Day Reception while conveying a good will message on behalf of The Gambia to people of America as they celebrate their 242 years independence anniversary.
“I would like to assure all Americans that we in The Gambia truly value our friendship with America and that we are highly appreciative of the leadership role that your great country continues to play in today’s world economic and political order,” Darboe said. “It is by no means an understatement that 242 years of independence and nationhood is no easy feat; and we applaud the American dream that drew its source from the country’s declaration of independence which promotes the values of peace, security, freedom and protection of human rights.
He acknowledged the support America has provided to The Gambia and said the government notes their interventions.
“I listened attentively to Her Excellency, the ambassador’s remarks, and would like to re-echo the tremendous amount of support that America has since provided to The Gambia. In almost all spheres of development, we have seen the immense contributions provided by the United States of America.”
“The government of The Gambia notes with special gratitude the interventions of your government towards promoting economic growth and development in The Gambia, through incentives such as the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) designed to trade the full engagement as well as participation of our private sector in economic growth and development.”
He showed gratitude for The Gambia’s admission to the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the much technical assistance the U.S. provides.
Darboe said the people in The Gambia are confident of international communities continued support to overcome many of their challenges in the strives to transform the country to become a model in terms of growth and development.
He assured the government will not disappoint the goodwill accorded to them by the international community.
He said The Gambia will continue to count on the friendship it shares with the U.S., noting as a young democracy; it will continue to be committed to the principles of human rights and good governance, freedom and respect of the rule of law.
“We will continue to knock on your doors to learn and to be inspired,” he said.
