The National President of Gambia’s Democratic Congress (GDC) Party Modou Cham, AKA MC Cham has warned that The Gambia is on brink of facing another dictatorship. Cham is a staunch critic of the Barrow led transition government. He says the recent letter issued by the President’s Office accusing The Gambian local broadcasters of spreading hate speech on the airwaves amounts to curtailing freedom of speech and dissent. Cham says the regime’s recent pronouncement shouldn’t been left unchallenged. He calls on Gambians to refuse any move from the regime to subjugate its citizens in the name of muzzling the press.
The Secretary General Ebrima Camara in a letter issued on Wednesday, accused the local broadcasters of broadcasting misleading information about the case of The Gambian deportees from Germany. It was the contention of the SG’s office that the messages being trafficked on air in regards to the deportees were one sided stories–devoid of the truth and factual reporting.
“The letter from the Office of the President addressed to the Information Ministry regarding the Radio presenters is a clear show of another dictatorship in the offing and we must not accept any oppression on the media. The journalists should be free in the execution of their duties and government cannot escape from criticism. Gambians will continue to criticize government in the interest of the public and no one will be allowed to tamper with our rights. Gambians voted for freedom and democracy and that is why Yahya Jammeh was voted out,” MC Cham said in a statement sent to the Freedom Newspaper.
“Therefore, I call on the Gambia Press Union to react to this letter from the Office of the President without delay if not, the media will be suppressed and very soon some radio stations will be closed or have their license revoked. #Say No To Dictatorship,” he concluded.
