Someone ran me through the history of the political alliance and comradery that existed between the former president of Senegal, Abdoulie Wade and current president of that country,Marky Sall. According to my informant,Marky used to be a protege of Abdoulie Wade. They did a lot together both at personal and political levels but along the way, something happened to sour the relationship and so it did not end up well between the two.
Marky played a crucial, instrumental role in the prosecution and jailing of the only son of the old, political warhorse of Senegalese politics, his mentor, Abdoulie Wade. Whatever the veracity or lack of it ,the litigation that resulted in the jailing of the former president’s son, obviously created bad blood between the two former comrades in arms. Now they are bitter political foes.
I am not familiar with Senegalese politics. I don’t follow their politics even though they are the closest neighbors to us and I always admired and respected the stability of our neighbors’ democracy. I still do. So I cannot speak of the validity of claims that the case against Kareem Wade, the former president’s son,was a political set up. That however is not the point of this write up.
The aim of this write up is to draw attention to the similarities between the relationship between Abdoulie Wade and Marky and our own Ousainou Daboe and our President Adama Barrow. Like Abdoulie Wade and Marky,Lawyer Ousainou Daboe used to be Adama’s mentor.
Adama, as we all know,is very close to Marky and being a political novice and, from the evidence before us, very indecisive and therefore prone to being manipulated and deceived,it does seems to me that Marky could well have had a hand in the apparent damaged political relationship between Adama and Lawyer Daboe.
Given his vast political acumen and experience,I think Marky must have prevailed on our groping and bumbling president and convinced him that he could go it alone. I may be wrong but I believe it is a strong possibility and if that is what happened I think mbeh siito wulee le fissiyataa! We must not see this as a joke anymore because it is not. If we sit back on our laurels and laugh at Adama’s apparent political immaturity and cluelessness,we will live to regret it because what Senghore, Abdou Joof and Abdoulie Wade tried and failed to achieve over the course of more than 4 decades,Marky will be able to accomplish over a couple of lavish State Banquets!! This is dangerous, murky waters and we must treat it as such. Adama doesn’t know what he is doing and the lure of continuing presidency can lead him and his bunch of opportunist handlers to give away our independence and even our country!Tay siito seeta!!!
