The President of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E Adama Barrow, Thursday 4th October 2018 received the visiting Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat at State House in Banjul.
Opening the meeting, Honourable Mamadou Tangara, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, said this is the first time an active Chairperson of the African Union Commission visits The Gambia. He said the visit is also an opportunity to express gratitude to the African Union for the support during and after the impasse.
He said the Chairperson promised to tell The Gambia’s story and Gambia is expected to take the driver’s seat.
Honourable Tangara also congratulated the Chairperson for his leadership in peace-building and security throughout Africa, citing the Horn of Africa where Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea signed the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation on 5th September 2018.
For his part, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed appreciation for the warm welcome accorded to him and his delegation. He acknowledged the difficult situation inherited by the new government but encouraged President Barrow to continue the reform process.
In a brief statement to the visiting AU Commission Chairperson, H.E President Adama Barrow thanked the delegation, recalling that H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat had given him a lot of courage during the political impasse.

President Barrow also said Africa has no excuse with the capacity and the knowledge it has to move the continent forward, reiterating his government’s resolve to maintain peace and security which he said is central in the integration efforts of the Agenda 2063.
The Chairperson and team wrapped up their visit with a tour of the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Bijilo.
