Two hand grenades exploded at the Kairaba police station, which is few minutes away from the United States Embassy along the busy Kairaba Avenue road, Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. No casualties were reported. The incident happened this past week. Residents reported that they heard a loud explosion inside the police barracks between the hours of 5 PM and 6 PM on the day of the incident.
“It was last week that two hand grenades exploded at Kairaba police station, along the Kairaba avenue, although there were no casualties reported and the explosion happened at a dumping ground within the premises of the station, where police officers and their families lived,” residents of the area told this medium.
Personnel of the Fire and Ambulance Service later showed up at the scene of the explosion, where they held to contain the explosion. They were able to doze off the explosion, one resident told me.
Police Spokesman ASP Lamin Njie was contacted for comment and he confirmed the story. He says grenade explosions did indeed happened at the Kairaba Station last week.
“I have the file with me, but if you would allow me to refer back to it then I will give you the details; may be tomorrow in the morning you can call me. I am not in the office right. The incident happened. It happened,” he told Freedom Newspaper in a phone interview on Tuesday.
No arrest has been made so far. ASP Njie said he not tell for sure whether the incident was a sabotage.
“I might not be able to say all of that because if I am able to refer back to the file then I would be able to recall the real situation; then I would be able to tell you an authoritative position about what has exactly happened,” he remarked.
When asked whether there was any cause for alarm, he replied in the negative. “ Not at all. Not at all. There is no cause for alarm. The situation is contained. It is normal around that end,” he said.
