Gambia: The Humulity of Lawyer Darboe, Tribute to Yusupha Cham

By: Alagie Phodali Jarju.

“I am not a hero, I am not brave, the brave people are the ordinary Gambians who accept the pains and suffering in standing with me against dictatorship and tyranny, And UDP has many such heroes. Gambians are sacked from work for being opposition, they are harassed and maltreated, call them heroes” The words of Lawyer Darboe showing us his humility On that note I crave your indulgence if I pay tribute to Yusupha Cham – The Newly Elected Chairman of UDP WCR.
Yusupha Cham has been a popular man since the 1970s when he managed a football team that represented Sukuta in the Serrekunda Nawettan. He then entered politics and took over from Abdul Karim Jatta as NCP’s candidate for Kombo North in the 1992 General Elections. He would then contest again as UDP Candidate in 1997 National Elections. In view of his commitment to the party, he would then meet up with Wassa Janneh, Sarjo Kunjang, Momodou Shyngle Nyassi and others to discuss a regional congress, only for NIA/Army thugs to arrest and torture them mercilessly.

Sadly. the APRC Government were too embarrassed of this incident and did promise to conduct an investigation. Unfortunately, there was no investigation and one of the torturer is now presumed dead.
In light of the above we will continue to remain grateful for all your relentless sacrifice for the party and Gambia’s subsequent liberation from 22 years of Babilli Mansa’s reign of terror.”
