Gambia’s presidency has posted on its Facebook social media page, saying “Investigation has begun to gather facts about what led to the clashes and who authorized the shooting. It has learned with regret the unfortunate incident about clashes between some Police Intervention Umit (PIU) officers and some natives of Faraba Banta in Kombo East, that led to the loss of two lives and several injuries.
It stated that the Office of the President is monitoring the situation and President Adama Barrow is being briefed.
Monday morning, a group of youth in the community had a confrontation with the PIU in protest of the presence of Julakay Constriction Company there to mine sand. This led to confrontation and two men were killed.
Julakay claimed that it was legally issued license to mind sand. The youth were protesting that the mining will cause more environmental harm to the community than good.
We will update as we gather more information,” the presidency said.
