Reaction to the UDP leader Ousainou Darboe, in response to the GDC’s Press Release that challenges his V.P appointment as unconstitutional.
Ousainou Darboe’s pompous reaction is a display of a boorish attitude and I quote. “It is a disappointment that someone who wants to be the country’s president is that ignorant of the Constitution”. Despite Ousainou Darboe’s four unsuccessful attempts to win the presidency, he is still trying to impose himself on the Gambian people. The fact of the matter remains, that If the UDP party fails to replace Darboe as their presidential candidate who lacks a political future, then the party is doomed to fail.
In today Gambia, Darboe is not sellable to the voters and cannot win elections in The Gambia due to the fact that he has an unappealing political history and people’s perception towards him is gravely negative and he(Darboe) continues to toe on those unappealing lines. Ousainou Darboe in his reaction failed to address Section 62 (3) (c) which found him wanting in tax evasion or arrears by a commission or committee of inquiry, the commission concluded that Darboe has a tax liability to the tune of nearly D2 million dalasi.
In respect to Darboe’s convictions which he appealed, it was clearly made known to him in the High Court in November of 2017 that the president in exercise of his Constitutional power pursuant to Section 82(1) of the Constitution could not have reversed the decision of the High Court convicting the Appellants of the offences stated therein.
“The power to reverse his conviction is a judiciary power and it lies only with the Court”. Therefore, Darboe remained to sustain his conviction and unless change of circumstances in the Court, he is not qualify to contest the position of a president an equally so, he is not qualify to be appointed as a Vice President of the country. This fundamentally epitomizes the crux of our challenge in relation to his appointment.
