I have seen and heard folks twist President Barrow’s statement in Faraba that he also sacrificed something during the impasse when his son died. They are making it sound as if he was referring to some form of ‘spiritual thing’. I honestly think that that is totally unfair.

It’s a common expression which shouldn’t be taken out of context. Losing one’s son like that at a time like the impasse is indeed very painful. He said that in order to console the people of Faraba to show that he also lost someone in this cause and that he knows – from experience – what they are feeling at the moment.

It is unfair to twist someone’s statement and give it a meaning he didn’t intend. Justice and fairness demand that we act civilly and respect all parties in this struggle.

Inasmuch as we would have wanted actions be taken in all the cases of unrest that occurred in the country in the past year, we should never lose our humanity, sense of fellow feeling and empathy in the process.

True, we have to be vigilant and keep the government on its toes, but we have to be fair and acknowledge a good deed when we see one. The constitution of a Commission of Inquiry to look into the Faraba incident is commendable. And we hope that it will do a good job of unearthing any and all wrongdoings in that saga.

We, however, should remain resolute in demanding that government always acts to protect human rights and the lives and properties of citizens. We should learn to be very objective in our dealings with government and its officials at all times. Anyone may go about that process of demanding for better in the way you see fit so long as it is in accordance with the law.

Detachment will enable us to treat everyone fairly, including members of the government which include the president. Demand for your rights but have empathy and fellow feeling as well.
We are all in this together. We all want a better Gambia.
