GAMBIA: INVESTIGATION INTO KILLING OF PROTESTORS ON COURSE: COMMISSIONERS SWORN IN
Gambian President Adama Barrow presided Thursday over the swearing-in of six members of a presidential inquiry commission to investigate the killing of anti-mining protesters in Faraba Banta last month.
The commission is tasked to find out who among the riot police officers that shot the protesters and where the authority came from.
“This swearing-in ceremony will allow us to follow the right process in order to establish the truth and, thereafter, take the right decision and a well-informed course of action,” Barrow said.
He said the incident has tested and challenged their journey towards the consolidation of democracy, good governance, human rights and national development as a government.
Meanwhile, the chair of the Commission, Emanuel Joof, assured of their readiness and commitment to carry out the assignment diligently with independent and impartiality.
The deadly incident in Faraba erupted last month during a confrontation between riot police and residents who denied a licensed company from mining, citing that its act will destroy their rice fields.
