IS THE NIA REPOSITIONING ITSELF AS SIS?

January 14.

During the previous regime, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) distinguished itself as one of the most notorious institutions in the country. They were known for so many evil things that a mere mention of the NIA could send shivers down the spine of citizens.

The then NIA arrested, tortured, disappeared and even killed citizens, allegedly. For this reason, whenever any person went missing or any evil thing happened to somebody, the NIA became the first suspects.

The allegations against the then NIA are so numerous, and so horrendous, one wonders how on earth they will be able to change the perception of the Gambian people about them. This is because; ultimately, they seemed to have moved far away from the mandate for which the institution was created by the National Assembly in the first place.

After the last presidential election, the new government proposed to change the name from NIA to SIS (State Intelligence Service) in order to rebrand and reposition itself for its proper raison d’etre.

It will take a lot of work in addition to a name change to rework the perception of Gambians about the NIA (now SIS), but a step towards that has already been achieved as it has been observed that they have restrained themselves from any arrest since the taking of office of the current government.

It the SIS keeps this up and seeks to strengthen our democracy by respecting human rights and the Rule of Law the it won’t take long for the citizens to open their arms to them again!
