The information that was contained in a recent media publication concerning the formation of a political party by Dr Adama Sallah of Lamtoro Clinic and Mr Momodou Sallah, alias Sillah Bai, is completely false and baseless, according to Dr Sallah.

Dr. Sillah said he has not in any way; shape or form ever discussed the formation of a political party with Sillah Bai.

“What actually happened is that since the end of Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship, a group of well meaning, highly exposed and enlightened Gambians, who have the development of our beloved country at heart, decided to come together and meet regularly to discuss the situation of the country and to share their thoughts and ideas with the wider Gambian community in a bid to make a meaningful contribution to the development agenda of the country.

It is not yet known whether this discussion group will metamorphose into an Independent Think Tank, a Pressure Group, an NGO or a Political Party. The course of events in the future will determine what will happen.  In this context, let anybody else who is interested, be informed, unequivocally, that the Gambian constitution guarantees the freedom of assembly and expression. Many Gambians may not know that some of the members of our discussion group were among the first Gambians to come together to form a political party called The Peoples Patriotic Front (PPF), soon after the end of the Military Junta in 1996. It was only after the leader of the UDP, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, came to us and made a passionate appeal to the members of our nascent party to come and join them in the formation of the UDP, because he did not want to see a split of the forces against the APRC, which was also under formation, that the majority of the PPF members decided to join the UDP, including Mr Ebrima Manneh, Mr Amadou Taal, Lawyer Mbasu Mbye, Mr Jabell Sallah, a veteran politician, Mr Ebou Corr of Corr Enterprise, Dr Adama Sallah, etc. It might be of interest to note that Dr Sallah was one of the early fund mobilizers of the UDP, lest some people might forget. Needless to say, some of these former members of the PPF made meaningful contributions in the development of the UDP.

If our current discussion group will evolve to become a political party, so be it. It is our unqualified right as good and committed citizens, to form a political party if we choose to, as The Gambia is our homeland, as enshrined in our National Anthem, and belongs to all of us. I would like to end this statement with the famous words of a former U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt, “The credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, who devotes himself to a worthy cause; someone who knows the great devotions and the great enthusiasms and if he succeeds, knows the triumph of high achievement, and if he fails, does so while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be among those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
